5 Quick and Easy Steps to Home Organization
Home Organization can be difficult for some while others seem to naturally be organized. As with anything that is worth having you have to work at it. I know that is not what you want to hear. You don’t want to hear that you have to be disciplined. You don’t want to hear that you have to keep yourself motivated and setup and follow goals for yourself. After all you do a lot of work at work, why do you want to continue to burn yourself out at home.
Well sometimes we all need a little help. So here are a few quick and easy steps to Home Organization.
- Make a Home Organization Plan – If you have been reading this blog for a while now you will know that I am big into plans. To me planning and home organization should be hand in hand. The thing I love about plans is that they are personal and customized to you. This is what makes it so important. I could tell you how to do this or do that, but ultimately you know yourself better than anyone. So make a home organization plan with success in mind. Initially don’t make it something that you would be overwhelmed by because then you will not want to do it. Make it simple and uncomplicated. Tip: If you have family members that can help make sure that you include them in your plan and delegate some responsibilities to them. After all they live in your house too!
- Get rid of paper clutter – One of the most difficult things that people have to deal with on a daily basis is paper clutter. If you pay attention to it there is such a large amount of incoming paper that it could actually be disturbing if left uncared for. If you currently have a pile of paper clutter weed through that which you need and file it away in a cabinet. Items such as bills and receipts should be filed away in their own locations. Other items should also be filed away on their own. The rest of the items such as advertisements and old magazines
could easily be tossed or recycled so get rid of the paper clutter!
- Keep a homeless box – Now I don’t mean a homeless as in a person but as in things. There are many items that we find throughout the course of our day that seem to not have a location. So instead of giving it a home and actually organizing we end up just moving it from place to place confusing yourself as to where it should go. Keep a box that is specifically for these items. Every week take a look through the box and make it a game to try and find a home for all of the items. If it doesn’t have a home you should ask yourself should I really be keeping this? Will I really use it? If not toss it or donate it, get it out of your home!
- Keep one area of your house organized at all times. I like to select the kitchen as it can easily be the most organized area in your home. The reason you should keep one area at the minimum organized is to be a reminder of how good it feels to be organized at least in one area of the home and then make that your starting point for the rest of the home. Tip: If you use your kitchen always do the dishes nightly, clean the counter-tops of any extra debris, and make sure that all of the tables are clear of items that should not be there.
- Always clean your problem spots first – Most people like to keep their trouble spots for last but that has to be the worst thing that anyone can do. You will usually have more energy and will have a better state of mind to organize your home when you are beginning then when you have been working at something for a while. Everyone has that one spot or area that they can’t handle or don’t want to do. This is why you should tackle it early on and get it over with. Just accomplishing that will help you stay motivated throughout the entire time of organizing your house as you will no longer have your most difficult task ahead of you. It is a good little mental trick that I have been using for years.
There are many more ways that you can organize your home but this should be a good little starter for those that need it. The most important thing is to stay motivated, stay disciplined and follow through. Reward yourself to keep the motivation and try not to overwhelm yourself. Following these tips you should find it much easier to accomplish your goal of organizing your home.
